Following the articles in May and June on the Precautionary Principle (see the "Topics" section archives for May and June), it emerges clearly that in the Bassetti Foundation website the Principle is treated as a variant on the theme of "Governance of Scientific and Technological Innovation"... - MorePosted by Redazione FGB on 26.09.05 00:16. Each year the Bassetti Foundation organises meetings with internationally renowned thinkers who have brought a highly innovative perspective to their respective fields. Thus, after the economic Richard Nelsen (Università Bocconi, June 2002) and the sociologist Bruno Latour (Politecnico di Milano, November 2003), this year the Foundation organised a meeting with Daniel Callahan (one of the world's leading experts in the field of bioethics) at the Università Cattolica to discuss his views on the impact of innovation on health and health services... - MorePosted by Redazione FGB on 27.03.05 00:09. From June to August 2004 the FGB site followed two main lines of discussion. The first, prompted by the publication on the site of Roberto Panzarani's interview with TILAB (Telecom Italia's research centre), focuses on the common ground between Training, Research and Innovation. The second, which also gave rise to a new initiative called Collaborate, was inspired by Bill Joy's strong concerns over what the Genetics, Nanotechnologies and Robotics (GNR) of the future hold in store for us... - MorePosted by Redazione FGB on 21.08.04 00:03. In recent months, the site has seen an intensive use of Web Logs ("Blogs") and interaction with the public through Calls for Comments (CfCs). Our first web space in CfC form was the one conducted by Daniele Navarra in June of this year, entitled "Innovation, Social Risk and Political Responsibility". Since then we have used this channel for collective writing to address in a focused and collaborative way those issues that have turned out to be most significant as the site has developed. - MorePosted by Redazione FGB on 03.12.03 13:57. The Call for Comments on Innovation, Social risk and Political Responsibility closed on 6 August. In the last intervention, Daniele Navarra, who conducted the initiative, pointed out that "the role of centres of excellence such as the Bassetti Foundation is as much to guarantee that policies that concern the community as a whole are implemented in a democratic and pluralistic manner, as to investigate, analyse and delineate problem areas, risks and difficulties in the various alternatives proposed, and to ensure that manoeuvres by lobbies and the media are filtered out of the process"... - MorePosted by Redazione FGB on 24.09.03 13:52. As announced in the previous Diary, on 14 May 2003 Piero Bassetti, as President of the Foundation, gave a lecture at the London School of Economics on "Innovation, social risk and political responsibility": "(...) We rarely have a clear idea of the relationships between innovation, change, risk and responsibility. Only very occasionally do we consciously address the serious political problems that the management, or non-management, of innovation can engender. Far too often, the problem of the independence - and hence the responsibility - of research is erroneously confused with the independence and responsibility of innovation..." - MorePosted by Redazione FGB on 30.06.03 13:50. In March, page 9 of the Topics section opened with the publication of excerpts from an essay by Adriano Pessina (lecturer in bio-ethics at the Università Cattolica di Milano) entitled "The 'sense' of the possible and the horizon of the limit in technological civilisation". Pessina's reflections belong to the subject area that we have been visiting over the last few months concerning the problems that emerge when a critical eye is cast over what we call "techno-science"... - MorePosted by Redazione FGB on 15.04.03 13:39.
