A seminar on governance and science at the Bassetti Foundation in Milan

On Friday 15th February 2008, at the premises of the Bassetti Foundation in Milan, Piero Bassetti opened the seminar on Science and Governance introducing Brian Wynne, chairman of the work group that produced the report “Taking European Knowledge Society Seriously” for the European Commission, and Mariachiara Tallacchini, a member of the group and translator of the report into Italian (Scienza e governance. La società europea della conoscenza presa sul serio, Rubbettino, 2008). The President of the Bassetti foundation welcomed the numerous guests, underlining the importance of the report and outlining the numerous problems that the document raised in terms of knowledge, power and therefore responsibility. A vibrant debate ensued, stimulated by the numerous themes confronted by Wynne and thanks to input from the discussants: Massimiano Bucchi, Sociologist of science from the University of Trento, Maria Antonietta Foddai, Philosopher of law from the University of Sassari, Raffaele Cattaneo, Regional minister for infrastructure and mobility of Lombardy , Bruno Montanari, Professor of the Philosophy of Law at the University of Catania, Giuseppe Adamoli, President of the Commission for the new Statute of Lombardy, Alessandro Colombo, Director of Research of I.R.E.R. (Lombardy’s Regional Research Institute), Giuseppe Testa, Director of the laboratory of epigenetics of stem cells of the European Institute of Oncology in Milan, Alessandro Cavalli, professor of Sociology at the University of Pavia, Scira Menoni, Lecturer of urban planning at Milan Polytechnic, Alberto Trevissoi, chief editor of the newspaper ‘Il Sole 24 Ore’, Cristina Grasseni, Scientific Director of the Bassetti Foundation and Fiorella Operto from the School of Robotics in Genoa.
