Information On The Giannino Bassetti Foundation Website

BRIEF HISTORY OF THIS WEBSITE

The website was founded in 2000 as an organ of the Giannino Bassetti Foundation: it was (and remains) a tool for participation, exchange and development of thought on issues which the Foundation wishes to explore, under its mission.

Under Gian Maria Borrello's direction and Massimo Bartoli's technical support, the website has expanded. It has undergone a series of topical and technical changes.

Around 2006, the Giannino Bassetti Foundation developed its skill for event organisation: meetings, conferences, lectures, and publications, using the website as an advanced support for developing discussion. Meanwhile, the website's growth (and increased users) made it necessary to radically overhaul its technological appearance and graphics.

This upgrade took place in November 2006, in a project by Tommaso Correale Santacroce and Massimo Bartoli, with Alessandro Scoscia. Following the trial phase, in July 2007 the website took on its present appearance and search architecture, which we hope you find to your satisfaction.

At present, all pages since the website's creation are still available: nothing has been removed - all material is a body of considered words that generates thought - and we will undertake to keep it accessible.

The new graphics include original links to pages that predate the 2006 website. The new architecture contains new pages, published using advanced content management systems, with constant technological updates.

COPYRIGHT AND CREATIVE COMMON

Copyright protection is a fairly controversial issue which is even more complex on the internet. We have decided to adopt the Creative Commons Public Licenses (CCPL) standard, which is growing throughout the network: we feel that it is an up-to-date, serious, practical project.

CCPLs are copyright licences based on the principle of "some reserved rights". The CCPL mechanism has been made possible by the fact that Italian copyright law - like corresponding national and international law in general - recognises a series of rights to the author of an intellectual work. Meanwhile, the law allows the holders of such rights to exercise them.

Therefore, with regard to material published on the Giannino Bassetti Foundation website, unless there are restrictions stated on a given page,

you are free to:

  • copy, distribute and communicate to the public, show in public, present, perform and recite this work.

Under the following conditions

  • Attribution. You must attribute the authorship of the work in the manner requested by the author or whoever has granted the work under licence.
  • Non-commercial. You may not use this work for commercial purposes.
  • No derived works. You may not alter or change this work, nor use it to create other works.
  • Each time you use or distribute this work, you must do so under the terms of this licence, and indicate this clearly.
  • At any event, you may agree on uses of this work not permitted under this licence with the copyright holder.
  • Nothing in this license impairs or restricts the author's moral rights.

ACTIVATED TECHNOLOGIES

(to avoid excessive technical discussion, we have chosen to link certain terms to pages that provide more in-depth explanation)

The principal publishing tool available to the Foundation's authors is Movable Type TM [3]. Using the personalisation and writing of evolved templates, this tool allows authors to automate content publication. The automatic features maintain the uniformity and correlations of the website's logical structure (categories, organisation and tagging [4]).

Particular attention has been paid to developing pages using the degradable techniques of the Unobtrusive Javascript code. This guarantees the separation of content from presentation, hence independence from the browser and reader access platform. Using the same criteria, the other technologies used (AJAX [5], AHAH [6]) have been optimised for compatibility with the previous browser and software..

For reasons of security, performance optimisation and correct website function, automated Perl [7], PHP [8] and, where necessary, SSI [9] (Server Side Include), procedures have been implemented.

OUR WEBSITE ACCESSIBILITY

"In ICT, accessibility is the capacity of a device, service or resource to be used easily by any type of user."(Wikipedia [10]) Colours; content area layout; font size and the possibility of variation; alternative texts to images and links; compatibility with different browsers, software and hardware; legibility with a range of screen resolutions….these are just some of the aspects referred to when we talk about "accessibility".

Our website has been created in compliance with all regulations on user-friendliness and accessibility. Although our type of website is not obliged to comply with law 04/2004 and its decreto attuativo [11] of 08/07/2005 on "technical requirements and different accessibility levels for IT tools", the techniques used in our site construction respect the check points under said decree.

All pages of our website have been produced using the XHTML markup [12] language with W3C Strict compliance. To this end, the website graphics have been created exclusively using CSS [13], which are also W3C [14]approved.

Attention has also been paid to the use of international standard techniques.

Further detailed information on the technologies used in this website and the reasons behind their adoption can be found in the Requests for Comments (FGB RFC) [15] blog.
